Indigo Dyeing with Christine Roberts
Add To Cart

Join Christine Roberts from Modelia for this one-day workshop as we explore the centuries-old technique of shibori indigo dyeing. First learn how to create and maintain an indigo dye vat. Then explore a selection of fabric binding techniques and experience the strong and surprising patterns that emerge.

All materials are provided, but participants are encouraged to bring along an additional, modest-sized item from home for dying (ie. shirt or tea towel sized as opposed to bedding or bathroom towels as vat space and time are limited). Item must be of natural fibers. Dying can be a messy activity, so be sure to wear clothes and shoes that you don’t mind staining.

Tea and snacks provided. Bring or buy your own lunch.
Maximum: 8 participants

Instructor Bio:
Christine Roberts was raised in a family of multi-generational sewists, and has been intrigued by patterns and textiles for as long as she can remember. While her formal educational is in Environmental Science, and earlier career is as a Web Developer, she has always been happiest when connecting with nature which her work in textiles does. Christine now operates Modelia, an eco-conscious textile brand, from her home-based studio outside Lakefield, Ontario. Her products are hand dyed using natural dyes, and exquisitely hand constructed. They can be purchased at craft shows throughout the region and at Watson and Lou in Peterborough, ON (

“The first time I witnessed the magic of dyeing with natural Indigo, I was hooked. I watched the fabric turn from green to blue right in front of my eyes. The fact that this beautiful blue colour had emerged from a plant just amazed me and I couldn’t wait to forage for other plants to experiment with.”
